    Meaties ready for semis surge
    April 1994

The Swift Mighty Meaty Hotdogs spoiled whatever chances left for crowd favorite Tondena 65 Rum and Pepsi Mega when they fashioned out a heart-stopping 116-108 overtime victory against the fighting Sta.Lucia Realtors.
The Meaties completed the semis cast the hard way, though, Sta.Lucia, which is slowly building up a solid frontline behind Jun Limpot and Jack Tanuan, just won't give up the fight. But the Mighty Meaties made several adjustments on their strategy at both ends of the floor and prevailed over the Realtors when rookie Boybits Victoria, Nelson Asaytono and Vergel Meneses took charge.
The adjustments work specially in the case of Victoria who played his best game so far in this conference with a career-high 22 points. He lived up to the expectation of his coach from the start. Asaytono, likewise, compensated from his lackluster game in their previous assignments and delivered.
And, of course, not to forget aerial voyager Meneses, who missed their game against Pepsi Mega due to an abcess on his right arm. It still gives Meneses little pain but he played well and even had a crucial, wonderful executed reverse dunk down the stretch.
"Ngayon pa lang kami bumabangon. This is a big step towards our goal in getting to the thick of the race. They showed character at magandang boost ito sa chances namin sa semis. I'm hoping to use the momentum of this game to get us through Friday's game, says Yeng Guiao, who looked elated with the way his boys played.
However, observers felt the game could have been Swift's right away had not Asaytono's foul off Jun Limpot, 1.8 seconds left in the final period, been called. With Swift leading by two, 103-101, it could have been a let-go situation for Sta.Lucia since Nelson's body up on Limpot was of slightest physical contact and normally would not have been called a foul. Just wonder what Swift could have done had it lost the game in the overtime period.
Nonetheless, the two ballclubs played one of the most exciting and exhausting ballgames here in the elimination round of the PBA All-Filipino Cup. Teamwork was the key for both squads but Swift had the breaks in the extra period.

Samboy Lim did not play against Tondena 65 Rum. he was pulled out for the rest of the game with still 3:54 remaining in the third period when he suddenly fell on the floor while guarding Glen Capacio, holding his knee, grimacing in pain last Sunday.
The Refs didn't see it but before that incident, Samboy was driving off Capacio when the latter's knee hit Lim's left knee. Capacio could have been called for a foul but no whistle was blown to the dismay of the San Miguel bench.
It could have something to do why Lim felt so much pain afterwards that he could not even step his foot and was carried to the dugout by the Beermen's ballboys.
A checkup by Dr. Tony Rivera at the Makati Medical showed that Lim's knee had a sprained ligament. It's not so serious, though, and depending on how the Skywalker responds to therapy, he'll be back within a week.
