SMB eyes Douthit for Fiba-Asia Champions Cup Gilasdouth

ABL champion San Miguel is looking to tap naturalized Filipino Marcus Douthit to beef up the Beermen in a possible stint in the Fiba-Asia Champions Cup later this year.

A high-ranking team official told Spin.ph that the Beermen are setting their sights on Douthit, who should be available and in shape for the Champions Cup since the September tournament in Jordan comes on the heels of his stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the Fiba-Asia Men's Championship in Manila.

“I’ve heard na nag-uusap na sila dahil after ng Fiba-Asia, tapos na ’yung commitment niya sa national team,” said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Douthit was naturalized in 2011, paving the way for the former Providence College cager to suit up for the Philippine basketball team in international play.

When asked to comment about the possible hiring, San Miguel coach Leo Austria said that he does not have that information.

Austria also said they have not received any invitation from Fiba-Asia on the possible participation in the Champions Cup after capturing the Asean Basketball League crown.

But if ever they get to play in the tough tournament, Austria said having Douthit will greatly improve their title chances.

“That’s the only thing na magkaroon ng advantage. Kasi at least, may Douthit, tapos dalawang import, and Asi (Taulava). I think magiging competitive ‘yun,” said Austria.
