Jessie Collado waxed hot from beyond the arc and buried the clinching three-pointer in Big Chill’s 96-83 rout of PC Gilmore in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Meralco gym.
Collado dropped 22 points against the Wizards, and shot 8-of-17 from the field, including an impressive 6-of-12 from rainbow country.
None more important was the one he nailed in the final 38 seconds to cap a closing 9-0 run by the Superchargers to seal the win.
The burly, 6-foot-3 forward from Lyceum-Subic Bay added three rebounds and two blocks, while Jopher Custodio fired a team-high 24 points, including 22 in the first half, to pace Big Chill.
It was the second straight victory for the Superchargers, who improved to a 6-3 (win-loss) card and now look forward to claiming a twice-to-beat edge in the quarterfinal phase.
And bad news for the rest of the field as coach Arsenio Dysangco admitted his team is bound to get better as the tournament wears on.
“We are still working on our chemistry, especially on the defensive end,” he said. “But at least we achieved our first goal of making the quarterfinals.”
Big man Jewel Ponferrada came back from a one-game suspension and scored 15 points for the Superchargers, together with Raffy Reyes.
But it was Custodio and Collado who set the tone for Big Chill as the duo combined for 46 of the Superchargers’ 58 first half points and was 10-of-15 from the three-point line.
The Wizards remain winless in five games despite getting four players in double figures led by the 19 points of John Agas.
Hitting 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, Agas rallied PC Gilmore in the stretch run. He banged in two three-pointers to highlight a 13-2 blast as the Wizards trimmed a 13-point deficit to just 81-85 with 1:37 left in the game.
Trailing 83-87, PC Gilmore had a chance to further close the gap, but Mark Cagoco failed to complete a steal off Keith Jensen when he blew a wide-open lay up with 50 seconds left.
Collado then took over from there, sparking Big Chill’s nine straight unanswered points.
