The AirAsia Philippine Patriots have announced the acquisition of two imports already familiar with the team as they beef up their roster in the coming ASEAN Basketball League.
Reigning ABL Best Import Nakiea Miller and Anthony Johnson have been recruited by the Patriots in their bid to reclaim the ABL title on the third season of the league opening on January 14.
The six-foot-10 Miller is a familiar foe of the Patriots as he played for the Westport KL Dragons last season. In the first season, he suited up for the Satria Muda BritAma team of Indonesia.
Johnson, meanwhile, is a former Patriots import but the six-foot-three recruit is hoping for a longer stint after playing for only two games with the team. He had also played for Sta. Lucia and Coca-Cola in the PBA.
Miller and Johnson along with the rest of the team will leave for Bangkok on Tuesday to take part a fund-raising tournament called “To Be No. 1 Basketball Challenge” set to open Thursday.
The Patriots will be pitted against fellow Philippine team San Miguel Beerman along with the Thailand Slammers, Singapore Slingers and Bangkok Basketball Holdings.
This early, the management of the Patriots are looking forward to playing with a highly-touted import in Miller.
“He’s a role player and we know he can deliver at crunch time. Aside from being tall and mobile, one good thing about him is that he can shoot from afar,” said team manager Erick Arejola in a statement.
The team is coached by former Far Eastern University mentor Glenn Capacio. The players are former SMART-Gilas member Aldrech Ramos, Al Vergara, Marcy Arellano, Reed Juntilla, Jonathan Fernandez, Eddie Laure, Eder Saldua, Angel Raymundo, Warren Ybanez, Rob Wainright, Erick Rodriguez and Ardy Larong.
