MARVIN Cruz never had a chance to play with or against Kobe Bryant and his fellow National Basketball Association superstars when they invaded Manila last year for an exhibition match against the Philippines’ finest players.
But the 5’9” guard, who temporarily found himself without a Philippine Basketball Association team to play for, will have this rare opportunity of playing under Bryant —Joe Bryant, Kobe’s father.
Sheryl Reyes, a lady agent, who partnered with Charlie Dy, Cruz’s manager, revealed the good news to Manila Standard.
“Marvin will play for Kobe’s father, who will coach the Thailand Cobras in the ABL this season,” said Reyes in a mobile interview on Tuesday. “Me and Charlie Dy, Marvin’s agent, are partners on this. Marvin will play for the Cobras at least for this season and will become one of the few imports of the squad.”
Cruz played for three PBA teams —the Air21 Express, the Coca-Cola Tigers and the Barako Bull Energy—before he was left unsigned.
Thailand will have two club teams playing in the ABL just like the Philippines. The other Thai squad is the defending champion Chang Thailand Slammers.
The elder Bryant played in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers, who were upset by the Portland Trailblazers in the 1977 finals.
