AFTER an aborted stint with the Globalport Batang Pier, defensive demon Justin Williams has found a new home in the San Miguel's ABL ballclub.
Agent Sheryl Reyes has bared to Spin.ph that an injury to Gabe Freeman forced San Miguel management to tap Williams, who was cut by the Batang Pier after a tailspin in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.
“Gabe is injured and he won’t be available for 3-4 weeks,” said Reyes, pointing out that the ABL has an April 7 deadline on the changing of imports.
“San Miguel management was worried that Freeman’s injury might relapse,” she added.
Though he led the PBA in rebounds (19.33) and blocks (4.67), Global Port was unhappy with Williams' lack of offensive skills as reflected in his 14.67 per game average.
“Justin is a good friend to all of us, hats off to him, but we really needed an import we can go to during critical moments of the game,” said BJ Manalo, Globalport team manager.
In an interview, the 6-8 forward said the San Miguel stint is a shot at redemption.
“I don’t really have prove anything, everybody knows what I can do,” said Williams. “It’s just unfortunate we got some bad funk at the game.
“This is business, if you lose, that’s what happens."
Williams is the second import in the Commissioner's Cup to find a new home at san Miguel after being axed, following in the footsteps of San Mig's Matt Rogers.
