Import Brian Williams rebounded from a poor series opener to lift the San Miguel Beermen to a thrilling 66-65 victory over the Indonesia Warriors in Game Two of the ASEAN Basketball League finals Sunday at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.
Williams struggled in Game One, scoring just two points in the Beermen victory. He made up for it with 17 points, including the game-winning layup with 5.2 seconds left, to carry San Miguel to a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
“That was their play,” said Williams of the Beermen’s formation, which was lifted from the Warriors’ playbook, to set up the game-winner. “We just ran it and it worked.”
Williams added 16 rebounds and four blocks for the Beermen, who now have a chance to go for a sweep as the series moves to Indonesia.
League Most Valuable Player Asi Taulava broke the game’s final deadlock with a free throw with 34 seconds left. But the Warriors’ Filipino-American star Stanley Pringle replied with a floater with 22.7 seconds remaining to give the defending champions their final taste of the lead.
Indonesia forced a miss on the Beermen’s Leo Avenido in the ensuing play, but couldn’t retrieve the ball as it sailed out of bounds on the baseline.
That allowed San Miguel to set up the final play for Williams’ game-winner.
Pringle had one last look for a game-winner, but his floater hit the back of the iron as time expired allowing the Beermen to escape.
