Victory that never was Empty Victory that never was

The Presto-Swift tussle at St.Louis University in Baguio could very well be called “the victory that never was.” It was full of intensity and drama even if the gym wasn’t really jampacked with spectators.
The game which started early (4:30 p.m) was quite tight with the Mighty Meaty Hotdogs really trying to keep pace with the Ice Cream Kings, Allan Caidic was given a hard time by the sticky defense applied on him by the gutsy Juancho Estrada.
Estrada even lost his false teeth when he was hit by a wayward elbow of Allan before he took a triple in the second quarter of the game. The Swift bench went into an uproar when Caidic wasn’t called for an offensive foul. It made Yeng Guiao really mad as he pulled Estrada towards Narciso Bernardo to show him the broken teeth of the latter.
Presto even lead by as much as 14 points in the fourth quarter but Swift, through the combined efforts of Nelson Asaytono, David Henderson, Edgar Tanuan, Andy De Guzman and Al Solis rallied in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. With only 27 ticks left, De Guzman drove in and was fouled by Rene Hawkins. He converted two free throws for the equalizer (123-all) then blocked Abe King in the next sequence.
After setting up the plays, Henderson went in for the basket with only two seconds left, Swift leading by two, In jubilation, however, the Mighty Meaties forgot there was still time left for Presto to try to set a play or even try a desperation shot.
Presence of mind allowed Abe King to throw a perfect pitch to Caidic who was already downstairs waiting for the ball. It was too late for Solis to realize the situation and in trying to stop Caidic from making the shot, fouled him instead for a three-point play. There was no time left so the ballgame ended with Presto winning by one point (126-125). Thus, the sixth defeat for Swift.
Tonight, Swift will try to survived against company rival, Purefoods, in the main game

As the PBA First Conference came to the end, a lot of drama unfolded one after the other. First was the Rudy Distrito-Jojo Lastimosa scuffle in Game Two of the battle for 3rd place where the two exchange words (and elbows, too) Distrito, found guilty of a deliberate foul, was suspended for the rest of their own best-of-five series and slapped a P10,000 fine. Distrito is the least happy with Commissioner Marquez’s decision but he can only abide by the decision.
Next was the unexpected and unpopular “mauling incident” also in Game Two where two Beermen allowed the emotional thing affect them and which shocked the entirety of the league’s followers.
What Yves Dignadice and Biboy Ravanes did were really not right. As professional cagers, they are expected to display an attitude above the others, reacting from an erring fan was a big mistake. They should have known better.
Actually it’s not the first time we heard or even saw a player (or players) reacting viciously against a foul-mouthed fan. We’ve seen Allan Caidic’s outrage over a Swift follower after they were eliminated.
High-flying Paul Alvarez of Alaska Airforce stole the thunder from Alaska when out of the blue he announced he wanted out of the team after he was benched by Tim Cone in Game Three for missing a shooting practice that morning, Apparently, he and Tim Cone have threshed out their differences that he once again led the Airforce with 35 points in Game Four when they made a two-hour and a half one-on-one dialogue last Saturday.
“May sarili akong dahilan,” opened up Bong when asked about his revelation. Call it intuition but Bong said he felt Tim Cone and Chot Reyes don’t like him.
