Alvin Patrimonio also played at the 1987 Jones Cup before he played in the 1998 edition as part of the Centennial Team but at that team he played more as a 3 as there a lot of bigger players in that team than him. Then that team captured the 21st William Jones Cup championship.
Their 1987 Jones Cup teammate Jerry Codinera also played in the Jones Cup was in the 1985 edition wherein the the eventual Champion Philippines was represented by the NCC Team but they wore the San Miguel Beer uniform that time.
Then that's the 1987 RP Team. Eric Altamirano was already out of the team come 1987 but he was part of the "Golden Bronze" Team at the 1986 Asian Games in which Benjie Paras and Nelson Asaytono were not members. In 1987, Lipa had to coach a team without any legitimate superstar since Samboy Lim, Allan Caidic and Elmer Reyes had already turned professional after the 1986 Asian Games.
When this team played in the Jones Cup, eventual 1987 Jones Cup Champion West Germany which is the only competing European team but it was bannered by future NBA players Detlef Schrempf, Uwe Blab and Christian Welp in that tournament, winning the Championship over the United States which was represented by Vanderbilt University that was led by future Chicago Bull Will Purdue.
But all of the National players from 1986-1988 with the exception of former NCC boys Samboy Lim, Allan Caidic, Elmer Reyes and Jerry Codinera were all just mere College players at that time. Now I remember, They failed miserably in the 1987 Jones Cup, ending up winless in the competition's final round and ended up at 8th place. The team and Lipa bore the brunt of ridicule and criticisms from the media and fans that time.

In the 1987 ABC, the RP team gave China with players like Wang Libin, Wang Fei and Gong Luming a good fight in their Quarterfinal meeting, not given much of a chance against the taller Chinese, the RP team pushed the favorites to the limits. China was up by just 3pts with a few seconds left in the game. However, the RP team had possession. Off a time-out, Joey Guanio was set up for a relatively open 3 pointer to tie the game. He missed, thus making the team face the other Quarter Final Group's Top team, South Korea. We could not stop Hur Jae who was at his peak, bombing away even in the face of tough defense which resulted in South Korea demolishing the Philippines thus relegating the team to a battle for 3rd against Japan. With our failure to get into the Championship game, the team was so demoralized that we would lose to the Japanese with China winning over South Korea in the finals. Alvin Patrimonio was named a member of the ABC mythical 5.
