DITCHED by San Mig Coffee in the PBA, Matt Rogers finds a new home at San Miguel in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) as he takes over the place of injured import Brian Williams.
San Miguel sports director Noli Eala bared the import change in his Twitter account @NoliEala, adding Rogers will play for the Beermen in their next outing against the Jobstreet.com Singapore Slingers on Sunday.
“Brian was ordered by the doctors to rest his knee. So we activated Matt. He will play on Sunday vs Singapore,” Eala tweeted.
Last season, the Beermen made a similar roster change when it tapped former Petron import Nick Fazekas to replace Jarrid Famous a few days after the Boosters sent him home.
Williams got hurt after injuring his knee during the Beermen’s 82-76 loss to the Westports Malaysia Dragons Saturday that relegated them to an even 3-3 (win-loss) slate.
Despite the loss, the Beermen climbed to a joint second with Singapore and Saigon after the Slingers defeated the Heat, 80-69, in ABL action Sunday.
All three teams are two games behind defending champion Indonesia Warriors (6-2).
Rogers had a forgettable campaign with the Mixers in the PBA that saw him miss the team’s Commissioner’s Cup debut against Barako Bull due to food poisoning.
The 6-foot-10 import even had the unfortunate experience of being stuck inside a huge mall in Mandaluyong City at the height of a robbery.
The product of Southwest Baptist University was replaced by Denzel Bowles shortly after the reigning Best Import became available.
