Avenido lifts Beermen past Indonesia Leoa

Leo Avenido buried a clutch shot in the final seconds of the game as the San Miguel Beermen downed the Indonesia Warriors, 71-69, Saturday in the ASEAN Basketball League at the Mahaka Square in Jakarta.

Avenido drove to the lane for a lay-up over import Steven Thomas with 16 seconds left in the game to shatter a 69-all deadlock.

The Warriors failed to convert on their final play with Mario Wuysang’s shot being swatted away by Jun Mar Fajaro before the final buzzer sounded.

The victory put the Beermen back on the winning track with an 11-4 record to stay in second place, after suffering a disappointing home loss to Saigon Heat last week.

The Beermen limited the Warriors to five points in the second period to claim a 37-31 advantage at the half. They also had a 65-51 edge with seven minutes remaining in the game.

However, the Warriors mounted a comeback with Rony Gunawan draining a three-pointer to tie the game at 69 with 42 seconds to play in the game.

Avenido entered the fray to save the Beermen from another sorry defeat as he delivered with an all-important basket for the win.

Avenido finished the game with 16 points in another solid effort although Jarrid Famous led the Beermen in scoring with 20 points.

Ex-Rain or Shine reinforcement Duke Crews, debuting for the Beermen as import after replacing Dalron Johnson, accounted for 11 points and 11 rebounds.

San Miguel will continue its road trip when it goes up against the Westport Malaysia Dragons next week in Kuala Lumpur.
